Description
Forged Rings for Slewing Ring Bearing Manufacturing
Slewing ring forgings are seamless rolled rings used as the base structure for slewing ring bearing assemblies. In heavy equipment, the slewing ring connects two structural components and allows controlled rotation while carrying axial load, radial load and overturning moment at the same time.
Because a slewing ring bearing often works under continuous load and low-speed rotation, the structural integrity of the forged ring is critical. Compared with cast rings or fabricated structures, forged slewing rings have a more uniform internal structure and better grain continuity, which improves fatigue resistance and long-term reliability.
We supply slewing ring forgings in three main delivery conditions:
Forging blanks for further machining
Semi-machined rings
Fully machined rings including raceways and bolt holes
Customers can choose the supply stage according to their production process.
Manufacturing Process of Slewing Ring Forgings
The production of slewing ring forgings begins with billet inspection and chemical composition verification. After controlled heating, the material undergoes open-die forging and radial-axial ring rolling. During this process, the metal flow follows the circular contour of the ring, which helps reduce internal defects and improve mechanical performance.
After forming, the rings are heat treated according to the specified material grade. Depending on application requirements, we provide:
Normalizing
Quenching and tempering
Surface hardening or carburizing
For customers who require finished slewing ring bearings, we also provide machining services including raceway turning, gear cutting, drilling of mounting holes and surface finishing. Critical dimensions can be controlled within tight tolerances where required.
Material Selection for Slew Ring Bearing Applications
Material choice depends on load level, working environment and service life requirements.
Common materials include:
50Mn / S48C (AISI 1050)
Used for standard slewing ring applications with moderate load conditions.
C45 / AISI 1045
Suitable for general industrial slew ring bearings.
42CrMo / 42CrMo4 (AISI 4140 / SCM440)
Widely used in crane slew ring systems and wind turbine yaw bearings due to higher strength and better fatigue resistance.
20CrMnTi
Used when case hardening is required to improve raceway wear resistance.
18CrNiMo7-6
Applied in heavy-duty roller bearing slewing ring structures where high surface hardness and core toughness are both necessary.
For marine or corrosive environments, stainless steel grades can be supplied upon request.
Applications of Slewing Ring Forgings
Slewing ring forgings are used in equipment that requires large-diameter rotational support.
In construction machinery, crane slew ring systems rely on stable slewing ring bearings to support lifting loads and rotation. Excavators and other tracked equipment also use slew ring bearings as key structural components.
In wind power generation, slewing ring bearings are installed in yaw and pitch systems. These applications require consistent load distribution and long service life under variable environmental conditions.
Mining equipment, bulk material handling systems, industrial turntables and heavy rotating platforms also use roller bearing slewing ring assemblies. In these applications, the forging quality has a direct impact on bearing life and operational stability.
Bearing Types Supported
Our slewing ring forgings are suitable for manufacturing different bearing structures, including:
Four-point contact ball slewing ring bearings
Crossed cylindrical roller bearing slewing rings
Three-row roller slewing ring bearings
Double-row ball slew ring bearings
The final bearing performance depends not only on machining accuracy but also on the internal quality of the forged ring.
Size Range and Custom Manufacturing
We manufacture slewing ring forgings in a wide dimensional range:
Outside diameter from 500 mm to 4,500 mm
Larger diameters available upon request
Wall thickness from 60 mm to 600 mm
Unit weight up to 12,000 kg
All rings can be produced according to customer drawings and technical specifications.
Quality Control
Each slewing ring forging can be tested according to project requirements. Inspection methods include:
Ultrasonic testing
Magnetic particle testing
Mechanical property testing
Hardness testing after heat treatment
Dimensional inspection reports
These inspections are performed to ensure the forging meets structural and mechanical requirements before delivery.
Technical Support
For customers manufacturing slewing ring bearings or complete slew ring bearing assemblies, we can provide support in material selection and heat treatment planning based on application load and working conditions.
